You're probably familiar with alarming, yet unproven, claims such as "running is bad for your knees" or "deadlifts are bad for your back." This is not to say that everyone should do everything, of course, and exceptions obviously apply. But many of the people who believe in these claims are also those who won't perform a certain movement or exercise because they fear getting injured, or worse.
This is, however, not always just a case of ignorance or laziness. Many people do, in fact, have an irrational fear of certain movements, mostly due to past trauma associated with pain. This rather excessive and irrational fear is known as kinesiophobia.
In this gallery, we explore where the fear of injury may come from, and its impact on one's quality of life. Click on for more.
