Texting has overtaken phone calls as the way we connect, and smartphones are undoubtedly a fixture in daily life: we use them to chat, learn, share, and much more. In 2011, a Pew Research Center study found that 73% of users sent texts regularly—averaging over 40 a day. Today, that number has soared, with nearly six billion people expected to use text messages in 2025.
But as texting continues to dominate, our thumbs are feeling the strain. Phones simply weren’t designed with ergonomics in mind, leading to a growing concern among doctors: an overuse injury known as “texting thumb.”
