Mental Health America has issued a list ranking how states fare when it comes to mental illness and adequate access to care among adults aged 39 to 51 years old. The list takes into consideration seven primary crtieria, such as the number of people with a diagnosed mental disorder; those with a diagnosed mental disorder but without access to health insurance; those with a diagnosed mental disorder that reported more than half a month of "mentally unhealthy days" but could not seek treatment; and those with a diagnosed mental disorder who have health insurance, but it does not include coverage of psychological care.
The ranking also takes into account those with substance abuse issues, including those with documented substance abuse and those with documented substance abuse who were unable to access treatment. The seventh consideration is the number of people who documented suicidal thoughts.
