The Black Death decimated a great part of the world in the 14th century, and it's believed to have wiped out about half of the population of Europe.
The bubonic plague was spread by bacteria carried by fleas that lived on rats, but people back then didn't know much about it. Though they tried to prevent catching and spreading the disease, the vast majority of their approaches were ineffective, while others actually made it worse. There were, however, a few measures that proved useful.
