New York City health officials are investigating a recent spike in Legionnaires’ disease cases concentrated in three Upper East Side ZIP codes: 10128, 10028, and 10075. The city typically records hundreds of cases of the potentially serious bacterial infection every year, but the unusual clustering has prompted an investigation into possible sources.
Testing has found the bacteria in cooling towers serving 76 buildings in the affected area, according to the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Individuals who have visited the area in recent weeks are being advised to watch for symptoms including fever, chills, fatigue, headaches, loss of appetite, confusion, and diarrhea. The infection can cause severe pneumonia, particularly in older adults and people with underlying health conditions.
