Legionella

A Legionnaires' disease outbreak in Central Harlem in New York City has now reached 90 confirmed cases, including three deaths. The outbreak, first announced on July 25, has prompted a public health response and renewed focus on preventing future incidents.

On August 7, city health officials proposed new regulations for the testing and maintenance of cooling towers—rooftop devices that can release contaminated mist if not properly disinfected. While a Department of Health spokesperson told CNN that these rules "were in development well before the Legionnaires' cluster in Central Harlem," the current situation has heightened the urgency of such measures.

Cooling towers in the affected area have been tested, and any that returned positive results for Legionella bacteria were ordered to be cleaned. The health department confirmed that all required cleanings have been completed.

Legionnaires' disease is caused by the Legionella bacteria and typically produces pneumonia-like symptoms. In this gallery, you'll get to know all about it—from causes to symptoms and treatment. Click on for more.
