Paralysis occurs when nerve signals to muscles are disrupted. When someone is either paralyzed or has paralysis, they are unable to voluntarily move certain parts of their body. There are two forms of paralysis: partial and complete. Those with partial paralysis are still able to control some muscles, while those with complete paralysis are not.
An estimated 15.5 million people in the world suffer from some form of paralysis; five million alone stem from the US, where 1 in every 50 Americans suffers from the condition. Only some people who suffer from the condition are able to regain partial or full movement over time. Others suffering from permanent paralysis never regain muscle control again.
