History

The Bayeux Tapestry has arrived in the United Kingdom for the first time in nearly 1,000 years, following an overnight journey from northern France that concluded at 2:50 am local time this July 10. Transported under police guard, the 70-meter-long (229 feet) 11th-century embroidery was driven into the British Museum in London, where it will go on public display starting this September.

Encased in a climate-controlled crate designed to absorb shocks and regulate humidity, the fragile textile crossed the Channel via the Eurotunnel before reaching London in the early hours. British Museum director Nick Cullinan described to BBC News the moment as “something rather extraordinary… returning to England for the first time in almost 1,000 years,” adding that staff were “so excited to share it with as many people as possible.”

The loan has been framed as a diplomatic milestone. French President Emmanuel Macron called it “a gesture of trust, a tangible expression of a long-standing friendship,” highlighting the shared history between the two nations. However, concerns persist in France, where critics have warned of the risks involved in moving such a delicate and historically significant object.

The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the most important medieval works of art in the world. Created in the 1070s, it chronicles the story of the Norman Conquests when William I defeated King Harold II at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, one of the most famous military engagements in English history.
