Confraternities are voluntary Christian associations that date back to the Middle Ages. They were formed to promote special works of charity and devotion. However, you are much more likely to know them as the people who wear tall, pointed hoods and dramatic face coverings while walking the streets carrying enormous religious statues.

So, how did this mysterious tradition start? And why do some of them walk the streets wearing chains and holding skulls? Click on to find out.
