The European Union has proposed new rules restricting social media access for children under 15, with under-13s to be banned from platforms and 13- to 15-year-olds limited to one hour a day through parent-managed “mini accounts.”

The EU Kids Act would also require platforms to adopt stronger child-safety measures, including age verification and safety-by-design features. The proposal follows similar restrictions introduced or planned in Australia, France, Spain, and the UK.

Australia was the first country to take such a step, introducing a ban on social media for those under 16 in December 2025. But while supporters argue such measures will make children safer and happier, some researchers have questioned whether bans alone can effectively address the challenges posed by digital platforms.
