From Sweden to Lithuania, EU countries vary widely in how many foreign residents they turn into citizens. The figures in this gallery show the percentage of non-national residents who acquired citizenship out of 100, based on a 2026 Eurostat report using 2024 data.
Overall, naturalizations have surged, rising from 762,000 in 2014 to 1.2 million in 2024. The vast majority of new citizens, around 88%, come from outside the EU, while roughly 11% are citizens of other member states. While large countries dominate in total numbers, smaller states often lead in rates.
