The Jacobites
were supporters of the exiled Stuart king James VII of Scotland and II of England and his descendants who in the 17th and 18th centuries initiated a series of political and military campaigns known as the Jacobite risings.
The Jacobite movement came to symbolize a bitter struggle between Protestants and Catholics and led to a series of bloody battles and rebellions fought on Scottish and Irish soil. Their movement remained a viable political force until the mid-18th century and embroiled French and Spanish forces who rounded up against a common foe: the English.
