The number of people who own homes can reveal a lot of information about a country’s history and economy, as well as its family traditions. In some places, buying a home is supported by affordable mortgages and a strong housing supply. Elsewhere, high ownership rates might have grown from privatization or inheritance.
Indeed, eight of the top 10 countries are current or former communist states, which reflects the legacy of socialist housing policies. But the number of people who own their homes is sharply declining.
