Over the past 75 years, the way the United States produces energy has changed almost beyond recognition. Back in 1950, coal was the country’s leading source, crude oil was expanding rapidly, and nuclear power, wind, and solar contributed virtually nothing.

But since then, the energy landscape has been reshaped in varying ways by new technology and government policy changes, along with environmental concerns and rising demand.
