Feminism was born out of women's suffrage in the late 19th century.

The Suffragettes fought vigorously for women's rights and eventually secured the vote.

In the 1960s, feminism expanded from legal rights into social and cultural liberation and evolved further throughout the 1970s, with women such as the late Gloria Steinem becoming major figureheads in the struggle for gender equality. 

Feminism today includes the demand for structural equality, bodily autonomy, and safety for women. Fundamentally, though, it's the belief and movement that all people, regardless of gender, should have equal social, economic, and political rights and opportunities.
