The idea of Canada joining the European Union (EU) may sound like a political thought experiment, but the topic has now been brought into the mainstream. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has begun openly pursuing what he calls a “unique alliance” with the EU.
But that doesn’t mean Canada is actually joining the European Union. Indeed, the Canadian government wouldn’t seek full membership and is instead beginning negotiations over a new relationship that could deepen cooperation.
