The World Risk Report 2026 has recently been published. The annual report includes the World Risk Index, which indicates the disaster risk from extreme natural events and negative climate change impacts for 193 countries in the world.
The index covers seven hazard types: earthquakes, tsunamis, coastal flooding, riverine flooding, tropical cyclones, droughts, and sea level rise. Storms are the dominant natural hazard.
Indeed, storms become disasters when they strike societies that lack adequate protection, for example the absence of storm defense systems, lack of evacuation routes and emergency shelters, and measures that reduce the hazard itself such as technical infrastructure, things like dikes and storm barriers. A deficit of nature-based approaches, for example the restoration of wetlands or the creation of retention areas, also elevate storm risks.
In this gallery, we list the top 10 countries with the highest storm risks, and the top 10 countries with the lowest storm risks. Is where you live affected?
