Across Europe, thousands of sidewalks and boulevards are embedded with small brass plaques that are meant to commemorate people who were persecuted by Nazi Germany before and during World War II. Known as "stumbling stones," these tiny memorials have turned ordinary streets into places of remembrance.
The project was founded in the ’90s by a German artist whose aim was to commemorate people at the last place that they chose to live or work before they fell victim to Nazi horrors. Since then, more than 100,000 of these memorials have been planted.
But what, exactly, are these memorials about? And how do they get made? Click on to find out.
