New York’s LaGuardia Airport was closed to flights early March 23 after an Air Canada passenger plane collided with a Port Authority vehicle on the runway, killing the pilot and co-pilot and injuring more than 40 people.

Following a one-hour flight from Montreal, the plane approached LaGuardia from the south and was landing on runway 4. Flightradar24 data shows it was traveling about 130 mph (209 km/h) just before the collision.

Jazz Aviation LP, which operates Air Canada Express, confirmed the accident in a statement. The airline said a preliminary passenger list, still subject to confirmation, indicated there were 72 passengers and four crew members on board.

Despite this tragic incident, the worst crashes in American history (aside from terrorist attacks) actually happened, for the most part, over 20 years ago. Click on to learn more about the worst airplane crashes in the United States.
