An Arctic blast sweeping across the US is bringing record-breaking cold and heavy snow to much of the country, marking the first major winter storm of the 2025–26 season.
The frigid air mass, which broke off from the polar vortex over Canada, began moving through the Midwest on November 9 and is expected to spread across two-thirds of the nation. The National Weather Service says up to 18 inches (45 cm) of snow could fall in parts of Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, and West Virginia.
Temperatures are forecast to drop sharply across the South, with Florida expected to plunge from the mid-80s (around 29°C) to the 30s and 40s (1–4°C) by November 11. More than 105 million people are currently under winter weather advisories, watches, or warnings.
