Spying

Aldrich Ames, one of the most notorious spies in US intelligence history, died in prison custody on January 5 at the age of 84, according to a spokesperson for the US Bureau of Prisons. The cause of death is to be determined by a medical examiner.

Ames was a CIA officer who was arrested by the FBI in 1994 and later sentenced to life in prison for selling US secrets to Moscow, with the breach costing the lives of many Russian and Soviet double agents who were secretly working for the United States and were executed once their identities were uncovered.
