Ayahuasca

A single dose of dimethyltryptamine (DMT), the primary psychoactive compound in the psychedelic brew ayahuasca, may significantly reduce symptoms of depression, this according to early-stage clinical trial results published February 16 in the journal Nature.

Researchers at Imperial College London found that intravenous DMT showed potential as a fast-acting antidepressant. The drug has a short half-life of about five minutes due to rapid metabolism, allowing for shorter treatment sessions that could improve convenience and reduce costs.

But independent experts cautioned that, while the results are promising, larger trials are needed to confirm the treatment’s safety and effectiveness.
