Debate - DST has led to an on-going debate about whether or not there's even a point to the time change. The truth is there are plenty of pros and cons to consider.

Pro: extra daylight - The extra daylight encourages people to get outdoors to run, play, and take advantage of longer, lighter evenings.

Pro: economy booster - The extra daylight also boosts tourism and the economy. The extra time outside encourages people to go out to eat, shop, and partake in more community activities and events.

Pro: safety - Some argue that keeping DST for the sake of lighter evenings is a good thing because it reduces pedestrian fatalities in the morning and evening by 13%, according to studies.

Pro: decreased home invasions - A study found that home robberies declined by 7% after the spring change.

Pro: less artificial light - With more time around natural light, people tend to use less artificial light, helping to save a bit of energy.

Con: not a significant energy saver - That being said, DST doesn't actually save a significant amount. It may have been true in the past, but in this technological day and age, television, computer screen, and air conditioner use is the same all around, regardless if the sun is up or not.

Con: illness - The change in time can actually make people sick in some cases, and can have a negative effect on your overall health.

Con: car accidents - At the start of DST there is an increase in a few things, such as automobile crashes.

Con: workplace injuries - The time change, even by just one hour, can cause a hike in workplace accidents.

Con: miscarriage - DST has even been linked to miscarriages in some women, specifically those using IVF.

Con: depression - At the end of DST, the early darkness can trigger depression.

Con: s u i c i d e - An Australian study found that following the time shift in the spring and fall, s u i c i d e rates went up among males.

Con: heart attack - And at the start of DST, heart attacks are more likely to occur.

Con: declined productivity - Studies have also shown that the one-hour time adjustment decreases productivity after the spring changeover.

Tip: alarm setting - During the weekend before DST, gradually set your alarm a little earlier. This way when Monday rolls around you are not as tired waking up.

Tip: breakfast - Don't skip breakfast. It's the most important meal of the day, especially during the time change. A healthy, balanced breakfast could be just the energy boost you need to help your body and mind adjust.

Tip: exercise - Exercise, such as a brisk walk, also helps ease the transition.

Tip: tuck kids in early - Putting your children to bed a little earlier will also make it easier on them and help them prepare for the time difference.
