The FBI offered a US$200,000 reward on May 14 for information leading to the arrest of a former Air Force intelligence specialist charged in 2019 with spying for Iran. The agency is trying to locate Monica Witt, whom it believes defected to Iran in 2013 and may still be supporting Iran’s hostile activities.

“The FBI has not forgotten,” said Daniel Wierzbicki, special agent in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office’s Counterintelligence and Cyber Division, adding that “during this critical moment in Iran’s history, there is someone who knows something about her whereabouts,” in reference to ongoing US-Iran tensions.

Witt was a former counterintelligence officer with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, and worked on assignments in the Middle East from 2003 to 2008. Following her alleged defection, Iranian officials are said to have provided her with “goods and services, including housing and computer equipment” to assist her activities, according to the indictment. It remains unclear whether she has legal representation in the US.
