Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado presented her Nobel Peace Prize medal to US President Donald Trump during a meeting at the White House on January 15, in an unprecedented gesture "as a recognition for his unique commitment to [Venezuela's] freedom," according to Machado.
Machado said the medal was meant to honor Trump’s actions. However, the Nobel Committee has made it clear that the Peace Prize cannot be transferred or shared once awarded.
The gesture comes amid ongoing political turmoil in Venezuela and diplomatic efforts in Washington. But this is not the first time that a Nobel Prize has sparked controversy.
