Natural disasters

Five German climbers, including a father and his 17-year-old daughter, were killed in an avalanche in the Italian Alps on November 1.

The victims were climbing Cima Vertana in the Ortler mountain range near the village of Solda in Northern Italy when the avalanche struck around 4 pm local time, according to Alpine rescue officials. Two survivors were airlifted to a hospital in Bolzano.

Rescuers said the group was likely caught as snow drifts gave way on the upper slopes, while fog and worsening weather later hampered recovery efforts. Avalanches remain one of the deadliest natural hazards in the Alps, with accidents rising in recent years as more mountaineers venture into remote high-altitude areas.
