The game is in full swing when a fan runs onto the playing area to celebrate or protest an incident. Like it or not, field intrusions and pitch invasions are part of sporting culture. Fortunately, most are amusing interludes: the gatecrasher is promptly removed and play quickly resumes. They're moments we all remember, and can admit we've shared a laugh over.
In the 51st minute of the World Cup match between Portugal and Uruguay, shortly before Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring for Portugal, a pitch invader brought the game to a temporary halt at the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Qatar. The invader carried a rainbow flag and wore a Superman shirt with the words "Save Ukraine" on the front and "Respect for Iranian Woman" on the back. The man, who was taken away by security officials, pulled a particularly bold move seeing as how controversial the rainbow flag has been at the World Cup, where reports are surfacing of fans and journalists being asked to remove any rainbow-colored apparel. CNN asked FIFA to clarify the dress code for fans, and the organization referred to the tournament handbook, which states “expats and tourists are free to wear the clothing of their choice, as long as it is modest and respectful to the culture.” The tournament drew much backlash from fans for being hosted in a country that doesn't support LGBTQ+ rights.
