Classified as "potentially hazardous," the 2024 ON asteroid will come within 1 million kilometers (over 620,000 miles) of our planet, a close distance in astronomical terms. While there is no immediate threat of impact, NASA continues to closely monitor the situation as part of its ongoing efforts to track near-Earth objects. Even a slight deviation could lead to massive consequences.
The last significantly sized asteroid to hit Earth happened in 2013, in Russia. This asteroid was comparable in size to a small building and disintegrated above the city of Chelyabinsk, damaging structures and leaving 1,491 people injured.
Incidents like this one are not uncommon, which makes us wonder: how close have we been to being hit? According to records, we've had a few close calls. Take a look!
