King Charles and Queen Camilla have arrived in the US for a four-day state visit, the first since 2007, with tight security in place after a shooting at a Washington, D.C. event attended by the president on April 25.
King Charles will address the US Congress on April 28 and is expected to express sympathy over the attack. He is also set to say that despite current disagreements between the US and the UK, “time and again, our two countries have always found ways to come together.”
The state visit, on behalf of the UK government, aims to boost ties as the US celebrates 250 years of independence.
The UK and the US share many ties, so it’s no surprise that American leaders have also made presidential visits to the UK and Ireland for over 100 years. Starting with Woodrow Wilson, every president since has paid a visit to the UK, meeting with the British royal family and often the prime minister as well.
