This July 28, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck southern Japan, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), with authorities even issuing a tsunami alert.
The quake hit near the city of Kumamoto, which is located approximately 600 miles (966 km) south of Tokyo. The JMA also reported that the earthquake measured at the highest possible level on Japan’s Shindo scale.
In a post on X, Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged residents to stay away from coastlines due to the potential tsunami risk. She also said that the government has formed a task force to assess any possible damage and prepare for rescue operations if needed.
As of time of publishing, there have been no reports of damage or casualties at nuclear power plants in the region, according to Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency also said no damages to public facilities or infrastructure have been detected so far, but assessments are underway.
