The Sultan of Brunei has stripped his daughter-in-law, Raabi’atul Adawiyyah, of her royal titles. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah issued the decree on August 8, removing the title “Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri” from Raabi’atul, who is married to his son Prince Abdul Malik.
The Office of the Grand Chamberlain said the decision was linked to conduct “deemed unbecoming” of a royal spouse, and said her actions showed a “lack of respect” toward the Sultan. However, no specific details about the alleged incident have been made public.
Raabi’atul married Prince Abdul Malik in 2015, and the couple share four daughters. Their children’s titles will reportedly not be affected by the decision. Prince Abdul Malik is currently fourth in line to the throne.
The move has brought renewed attention to the 80-year-old Sultan, one of the world’s last absolute monarchs and the longest-reigning current monarch. Known for his immense wealth and controversial laws, he has ruled Brunei since 1967.
