Women's rights

US defense secretary Pete Hegseth recently shared a video featuring several pastors advocating for revoking women’s right to vote, drawing concern from a progressive evangelical group.

The post, shared August 7 on X, was a CNN segment highlighting pastor Doug Wilson, a Christian nationalist and co-founder of the Idaho-based Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches (CREC). In the clip, Wilson suggests women should not vote, saying, “I would like to see this nation being a Christian nation, and I would like this world to be a Christian world.”

Hegseth’s repost came as the Trump administration intensifies its promotion of Christian nationalism. The effort follows Trump’s renewed alliance with the Christian right in his second term, including an executive order establishing a federal task force to investigate what he describes as “anti-Christian bias” in government agencies.

Wilson’s remarks also remind us how women’s suffrage—now taken for granted in many places—is a relatively recent achievement in much of the world. In most countries, women gained the right to vote only about 100 years ago, with some nations adopting it more recently.
