Freedom of information and unlimited access to the internet are things we take for granted in many parts of the world. However, the tense political climate and coronavirus pandemic raised questions about reliable sources of information and freedom of speech. In many countries, your government decides what information you should have access to, and may even punish you for expressing your personal opinions.
The Chinese government has been known to wield a great deal of power over the country's entertainment industry. Streaming sites like Netflix and HBO Max are banned there due to their restrictions on Western products. The state's media regulator has now called for even more serious restrictions on the types of entertainment allowed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, they recently "called for the boycott of “sissy” boybands and effeminate men on television, the end of reality talent shows and a ban on vulgar social media influencers among a raft of other measures."
They have requested that media companies avoid “immoral” and “overly entertaining” celebrities, as well as “sissy idols” who go against "correct beauty standards.” This refers to the growing boy band trend spreading through Asia, with K-pop groups like BTS and Halo popularizing a more feminine approach to fashion for men.
