Crepuscular spectacular: sunbeam images from around the world
Sunray landscapes and interiors
© Shutterstock
Crepuscular rays are sunbeams that originate when the sun is below the horizon. Like sunbeams, they appear to radiate from the sun's position, even though the sun is very often nowhere to be seen. These bright rays shine through openings in clouds or between other objects such as mountains and buildings to lend any scene an eerily surreal and sometimes dramatic quality. Crepuscular rays have even been called "God rays," such is their ethereal beauty and enchanting glow. This gallery therefore captures sun-beamed rays falling across landscapes and radiating into churches, mosques, temples, and other places of worship.
