The flash flood mainly affected workers of a hydroelectric power facility who were resting in a temporary shelter. Although these events are common in the area, the increased deforestation to make space for infrastructure projects has multiplied the devastation caused by the flash floods.
But this phenomenon is not limited to India—almost everywhere in the world there has been an increase in extreme floods, in part due to climate change. Indeed, history has recorded some truly terrifying floods—natural disasters that have killed thousands and destroyed homes and livelihoods.
