These major companies are exiting Russia amid the Ukrainian invasion

As soon as the Iron Curtain came down after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, international companies rushed in to plant their flags in a major new market. World-famous businesses from McDonald's to MasterCard created lucrative ties with Russia over the following decades. However, when Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, initiating an unprecedented war with a European nation, these ties were quickly severed. Countries all over the world rushed to apply sanctions in an effort to choke Russia financially, hoping to slow their war efforts. Consequently, some of the largest companies in the world decided to close their stores and suspend all operations in Russia in response to the invasion.
The downside to these businesses exiting the country is that at least 6.5% of Russia’s workforce is employed by international companies. Many have pledged to support their Russian employees financially, recognizing that they are not representatives of their government's actions.
