Evolution -

Being scared of loud noises is natural, and indeed an evolutionary response. This is true for both people and animals. But while we can consciously distinguish between a real threat and a false one, many animals can’t.

Phobia -

This can lead to an irrational fear, or phobia of particular sounds. In fact, these are quite common in dogs, according to a 2016 research paper.

Study -

A total of 3,284 answers to a questionnaire were analyzed; the study considered 192 breeds in total. An estimated 39% of dogs showed symptoms of noise fearfulness.

What are noise phobias? -

This is when your dog displays intense and abnormal reactions to one or more sounds. Some of these are fairly common sounds, such as the sound of a vacuum cleaner.

Are all dogs fearful of the same noises? -

There are some noises that affect more dogs, more often. But their reaction to certain sounds can depend on environmental and genetic factors.

Critical socialization period -

It's especially important to socialize dogs until they reach 12 to 14 weeks of age. This period is paramount for pooches to get accustomed to a variety of stimuli, including different sounds. Not doing so can lead to phobias down the line, including to certain sounds.

Trauma -

Traumatic events can also lead to noise phobias, especially when associated with other stressors, such as separation and loneliness. Example: a dog left alone and exposed to a smoke alarm chirping all day.

Their hearing is different -

The frequencies humans can hear only go up to 20,000 Hz, whereas dogs can hear frequencies up to 45,000 Hz. So they can hear some very high-pitched sounds, while we’re oblivious to them.

Dog breeds more prone to noise phobias -

It’s believed that certain breeds are genetically more prone to these phobias. These include German Shepherds, Australian Shepherds, and Border Collies, among others.

Signs of noise phobia -

Dogs can display fearfulness of a sound in many different ways, including trembling or shaking, pacing, panting, and being very alert.

Thunderstorms -

Thunderstorms can be really scary for dogs. Not only because of the thundering sounds, but also because of changes in barometric pressure, the sound of rain, and lightning.

Fireworks -

Not only are these extremely loud, but because they don't really follow a pattern these sounds are unpredictable and pups get frightened and stay on high alert for danger.

Gunshots -

Gunshots, particularly at a close range, can be extremely loud. So much so that those firing a gun usually wear ear protection. Now imagine what it sounds like for pups, with their sensitive ears.

Garbage trucks -

The sounds made by big vehicles are a no-no for dogs. Especially when they make additional noises like garbage trucks make while doing their job, including beeping and screeching.

Buses -

Buses are large vehicles, and while many are not as noisy as they used to be, they do make some really scary noises for dogs, including the sound of air brakes.

Vacuum cleaners -

This is a classic. Vacuum cleaners not only make a scary sound, but they also move. And they do so in your pooch's territory!

Skateboards -

Skateboard wheels make a very distinctive noise on the pavement, and one that is not pleasing to dogs. Plus, this is also accompanied but other loud bangs when tricks are performed. Your pup is definitely not a fan.

Babies crying -

Babies can cry quite loud, and their cry is usually high pitched, making it unpleasant for dogs to listen to.

Construction noises -

It's safe to say that no one likes these, but dogs can't really put on noise-canceling headphones and go about their lives like nothing is happening.

Alarms -

Car alarms are probably the most likely to go off and scare your pooch, but any other loud alarm will do the same. Not only are they very loud, alarms can also make windows and other materials vibrate.

Sirens -

Sirens are one of the loudest high-pitched sounds you and your pet can be exposed to. A passing fire truck, ambulance, or police car can really disturb your dog.

Aircraft -

Jet airplanes can make a very loud noise, so if you live near an airport and are exposed to these, good sound insulation is a must so that both you and your pets don't suffer with unhealthy levels of sound pollution.

Air conditioners -

Air conditioners and furnaces can make a scary sound when they're turned on. These sounds may startle your dog as a result, so bear this in mind.

Soothing sounds -

While dogs find many sounds unpleasant, and some even really scary, there are also sounds that can have a soothing effect on your pooch.

Classical music -

Classical music can be quite relaxing for your dog to listen to. A 2015 study found that classical music reduces environmental stress in kenneled dogs, so give it a try and see if it relaxes your pooch.

White noise -

Another sound that can ease anxiety and fear when your pooch is exposed to stressors such as fireworks or a thunderstorm is white noise. You can find numerous examples online and play them for your dog.

Waterfall -

The sound of a waterfall can help mask an unpleasant sound, as well as be relaxing for your dog. Again, you should be able to find playlists with these sounds on numerous online platforms.
