LIFESTYLE History

During the early years of the 20th century, in a Manhattan neighborhood called Harlem, America experienced one of its greatest artistic and intellectual awakenings. Escaping the violent and oppressive effects of Jim Crow in the Southern states, African Americans began to move northwards in great numbers in what is now known as the Great Migration. Many individuals settled in Harlem, and turned the neighborhood into a beautiful space of artistic expression, political thought, community work, and freedom. While the Harlem Renaissance was effectively put to an end by the stock market crash of 1929 that started the Great Depression, the people, the thoughts, and the works of art that flourished during this time have left a permanent mark on the United States and its history.

Read on to find out more about some of the most notable and honorable figures of the Harlem Renaissance.
