A delivery truck carrying soda was swallowed by a sinkhole in Mexico City’s Iztapalapa borough on September 13, local authorities confirmed. The truck slid backwards into the hole, though no injuries were reported. Officials quickly cordoned off the area to prevent further damage or accidents.
Iztapalapa’s mayor said preliminary findings point to a drainage system collapse as the likely cause.
Sinkholes are basically large holes or depressions in the ground that appear when the land surface collapses into cavities below. They are usually formed through erosion caused by groundwater. Sometimes it can take thousands of years of erosion before they finally collapse.
