The United Nations General Assembly on March 25 adopted a resolution recognizing the transatlantic slave trade as the “gravest crime against humanity.” The measure passed with 123 votes in favor, led by Ghana and supported by African and Caribbean nations.

The United States, Israel, and Argentina voted against the non-binding resolution, while the United Kingdom and all 27 European Union member states were among 52 countries that abstained. Supporters said the move acknowledges the lasting impact of slavery, including ongoing racial inequalities.
