A man opened fire with a rifle in Midtown Manhattan on the evening of July 28, killing four people, including a New York Police Department officer, before taking his own life. The attack occurred during rush hour inside a Park Avenue skyscraper that houses corporate offices for the National Football League (NFL).

Police identified the shooter as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas, who had a documented history of mental health issues. Authorities are still investigating his motive, but papers recovered from his body suggest he had grievances with the NFL over its handling of CTE, a brain disease associated with repeated head trauma.

Mass shootings like this remain a painful and recurring part of American history. Despite decades of debate, the lack of comprehensive gun control legislation means such tragedies continue to occur. Carried out increasingly by young men who also often suffer from serious mental health or substance abuse problems, these attacks continue to plague the country.
