Greenwood Park Mall, Indiana
- On July 17, a 22-year-old man opened fire at the food court of the Greenwood Park Mall in Greenwood, Indiana. The shooter used what appeared to be a long-gun rifle to shoot five people, one male and four females. Three of the victims died, while the two others, one of whom was a 12-year-old girl, were brought to hospital and are in stable conditions. The perpetrator was shot and killed by a civilian who was lawfully carrying his own gun and happened to be in the food court when the shooting broke out. Local law enforcement are praising the local man who may have saved many lives with his quick action. The motivations of the gunman are still under investigation as the town mourns those who were lost. "This tragedy hits at the core of our community," Greenwood Mayor Mark Meyers said in a Facebook post. "Please offer your prayers to the victims and our first responders."

The deadliest mass shootings in the US
Two killed and five injured in shooting at Los Angeles park on July 24
© Getty Images
This is a heavy-hearted topic to address, but one that nonetheless has tainted American history. Mass shootings have been around for a long time, but unfortunately, without proper gun control legislation, these tragic events don't look like they are going anywhere. Carried out increasingly by young men who also often suffer from serious mental health or substance abuse problems, these attacks continue to plague the country, as recently as during the Fourth of July parade in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, where a gunman killed six people and injured over 30 more.
On Sunday, July 24, two people were killed and at least five others were injured after gunfire erupted at a Los Angeles park. The LA Fire Department said the incident occurred at or near the car show being held at Peck Park in LA's San Pedro neighborhood, and that at least three people suffered gunshot wounds and two of them were in critical condition, AP News reports. As of yet, police have not offered a motive and no arrests have been made.
In this gallery, we look through the dark history of mass shootings in the US. Click through the gallery to learn more about these tragedies.
