Japan's history of the performing arts is long and vibrant, and even if the particular stories and customs aren't well known the world over, everyone has a picture in their head of vibrant makeup, terrifying masks, and ornate costumes. Kabuki is by far the most well-known form of Japanese theater, and has built up quite the reputation as a rowdy and exciting affair. While today it is enjoyed and revered by all classes of Japanese society, kabuki is distinct in that it was the first form of Japanese entertainment created by and performed for the masses of common folk in medieval Japan. From it's humble beginnings, it has become a cornerstone of Japanese culture, and has even been designated an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
