Tennessee officials failed to execute Christa Pike on September 30 after two doses of a lethal drug did not work.
According to Pike’s attorneys, she was alive and snoring after the lethal injections of pentobarbital were administered. She was later taken by ambulance to hospital and is now being treated.
Pike had been scheduled to be executed at 10 am local time on September 30 for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, when Pike was just 18. If the injections had worked, Pike would have been the first woman to be executed in the state of Tennessee in over 200 years.
Days earlier, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee denied Pike’s clemency petition. After the botched execution, he suspended executions for the rest of the year, requesting a "comprehensive, third-party review" of Pike’s execution attempt, according to The Tennessean.
