Malpractice

According to the findings of an internal orthopedic review published on January 29 by Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), based in London, England, former surgeon Yaser Jabbar was found to have caused harm to 94 children under his care. Some 36 of those patients were reported to have suffered severe harm.

The review found that the harm ranged from mild cases, such as the administration of an unnecessary general anesthetic, to more severe, including instances of surgeries that failed to achieve the desired outcome or delayed diagnosis.

The review examined the cases of 789 patients who were treated by Jabbar during his years working at GOSH between 2017 and 2022.

Indeed, news like this creates a legitimate cause for concern for the general public, given how much we rely on the care and professionalism of medical practitioners. Doctors, surgeons, and healthcare professionals are meant to be some of the most trusted members of society. Truly, the vast majority of doctors in the world are competent, responsible, and trustworthy individuals—but that doesn't mean mistakes aren't made in their difficult profession.

The Hippocratic Oath taken by all doctors proclaims that, above all else, medical professionals shall not cause harm. But harm is unfortunately caused quite regularly. Sometimes it's an innocent mistake; other times it's malicious malpractice. But it always makes our skin crawl.
