Marie-Louise Eta is making history after being appointed head coach of FC Union Berlin men's team on April 11. The 34-year-old becomes the first woman to lead a men’s side in Germany's Bundesliga and across Europe’s top five soccer leagues.
Eta steps in following the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart on April 10, after a 3–1 loss left the club fighting to avoid relegation. With five games remaining, she faces the immediate challenge of securing the team’s top-flight survival.
“I’m happy that the club entrusts me with this challenging task,” Eta said, expressing confidence that the team can “get the decisive points.” The appointment builds on her trailblazing journey, having already become the Bundesliga’s first female assistant coach in 2023.
