This August 20, South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back contradicted US President Donald Trump’s earlier claims that North Korea has 57 nuclear weapons, emphasizing that the nation has far more than that.
In particular, the defense minister, who was seen speaking at a defense committee meeting in Seoul, said that he believes North Korea has "around 80 to 120." However, he added that there are limitations on determining the exact figure.
His commentary came the day after Trump told reporters that he plans to meet North Korean leader Kim John Un this year, and that the country currently has 57 nuclear weapons. While Ahn provided a different figure to that of Trump’s, he declined to directly make a comment on the US president’s estimates.
Indeed, for all kinds of reasons, certain nations have strict and often intimidating defense policies, including arming themselves with nuclear weapons. With a global nuclear stockpile close to 13,000, it is frightening to imagine that most of these are much more powerful than the nuclear weapons dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
