Skywatchers can expect a subtly brighter and larger moon on November 5, as the closest supermoon of 2025 rises into view. Unlike a perfectly circular orbit, the moon’s path around Earth varies, occasionally bringing it nearer. When this proximity aligns with a full moon, it creates a supermoon—appearing up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than the faintest full moon of the year, according to NASA.

This marks the second of three supermoons in 2025, with the moon coming within just under 222,000 miles (357,000 kilometers) of Earth. While the visual difference may be hard to detect without instruments, the moon’s closeness can cause slightly higher tides. No special equipment is needed to enjoy the view—just clear skies and a moment to look up.
