Climate change

Scientists are warning that New Orleans could eventually become surrounded by water as rising sea levels and coastal erosion continue to threaten the region.

Analysis published in Nature Sustainability on May 4 argues that parts of coastal Louisiana have already “crossed the point of no return,” with experts urging officials to begin planning long-term relocation strategies now to avoid future chaos.

The report highlights how wetlands surrounding New Orleans, which help protect the city from hurricanes and storm surges, have rapidly disappeared over recent decades. Researchers warn that stronger storms, sinking land, and accelerating sea-level rise could leave much of the region increasingly vulnerable this century.

Climate experts say New Orleans is not alone. From Bangkok to Shanghai and New York, rising seas threaten major cities around the world. Click through to see which places could face serious flooding risks by 2030.
