Facts

China has discovered its largest gold deposit since 1949, with an estimated 1,444 tonnes of gold found in Liaoning province. The discovery comes as gold prices reach record highs.

China’s Ministry of Natural Resources confirmed the news this November 14, describing the find as the largest single gold deposit reported in the country since the founding of the People’s Republic. The site, known as Dadonggou, holds about 2.6 million tonnes of ore, which adds up to roughly 1,444 tonnes of gold. At today’s prices, the gold is worth more than US$193 billion.

Natural resources touch nearly every part of our lives, from the electricity in our homes to the phones in our pockets. Some of these resources face questions about sustainability, and it may be years before alternatives, like renewable energy, can fully replace them. But have you ever wondered where the world’s main sources of fuel and minerals come from?

While some places are obvious and well known, others might surprise you. Unfortunately in many cases, however, being rich in resources doesn't translate to economic prosperity for the local population.

Curious? Click on this gallery to learn about some of the world's most important resource reserves and where they're located.
